Northumberland is a county in North East England. The northernmost county of England, it borders Cumbria to the west, County Durham to the south and Scotland to the north. To the east is the North Sea coastline with a 64-mile (103 km) long distance path. The county town is Alnwick although the county council is located in Morpeth.

The county of Northumberland included Newcastle upon Tyne until 1400, when the city became a county of itself.

Being on the Anglo-Scottish border, Northumberland has been the site of a number of battles. The county is noted for its undeveloped landscape of high moorland, now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland is the most sparsely populated county in England, with only 62 people per square kilometre.

The physical geography of Northumberland is diverse. It is low and flat near the North Sea coast and increasingly mountainous toward the northwest.

Sea Fishing is permitted outside of the marine reserve and there are numerous coarse and game fishing venues and opportunities in the county.

Felling Fly Fishing Club

Website
Felling Fly Fishing Club was founded in 1984 by some 10 people who believed there was a place for a new game fishing club within the region as it was very difficult to gain access to any of the local clubs at that time. Those early days saw plenty of hard work put in by the few members that we had and we acquired our first piece of fishing water later that year, the river Rede, in Northumberland and the main tributary of the north Tyne. In the near 30 years that we have be going we have seen waters come and go, like Tumbleton Lake at Cragside, Blackton Reservoir in north Yorkshire the river Garry on the west coast of Scotland and the river Liddle in Cumbria. Some of the waters we would liked to have retained and others were sacrificed for newer and better fishing for the members.

Haltwhistle and District Angling Association

Website
David Stobbart,- Heatherlea, Park Road, Haltwhistle Northumberland NE49 9BP 01434 321858 - he South Tyne is a spate river and as such the conditions can change rapidly, a placid slow flowing stream can change into a raging torrent in a few minutes, particularly in thundery weather conditions. Thigh waders will be all you will need for most of the fishing but chest waders can be useful on some of the bigger pools. I would recommend either studded or felt soled waders, I would not use plain rubber soles, particularly if wading deep. I would also recommend the use of a wading stick. There are no particular hot spots and all of the river can fish well. It can get busy, particularly towards the end of the season, but if you are prepared to walk away from the easy access points you should be able to fish.

Northumbrian Anglers' Federation

Website
P A Hall - 3A Ridley Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland NE1 8LF - The Northumbria Anglers Federation was originally founded in January 1894 under the name of the Tyneside Anglers Federation; this was altered in 1896 to its present name. The waters controlled were leased from the Duke of Northumberland. In those days the then Duke was unhappy about the non-sporting antics being used on the riverbanks of the Coquet. Poaching and snatching were prevalent and the loss of the lease was considered but after persuasion from Northumberland county councillors he decided against the action and the Federation gained control of the waters with conditions attached to their agreement...
