River Bure at Wroxam ©Colin Chatten
Norfolk has a number of well fished rivers and man-made lakes and ponds but is most famed for 'the broads'; where ancient peat digging flooded to form shallow stretches of water with the characteristics of lake and river. Some of the best pike ever caught in the UK have come from the broads which have suffered agricultural pollution but are recovering in many places due to good conservation work.

Much of the 'fens' have been drained in the last 150 years and there are numerous dykes and ditches where Zander were introduced last century.

Some fast clear rivers, like the Wensum, are renowned for large Barbel. The area known as the Norfolk Broads encompasses seven rivers and 63 Broads and is a Mecca for fishing. A lot of it is free to fish from the bank and almost all of it is free to fish from a boat, fish species populating these rivers and broads include Pike, Bream, Roach, Perch, Rudd, Dace, Tench, Eels and Carp as well as other less fished for species.

The famed River Wensum has stretches owned by clubs or privately but the first free fishing can be found at Fakenham. Most of the free fishing is in and around Norwich City where my favorite spot to fish along the Wensum is at the riverside shopping area where there is a deep turning basin which holds plenty of bream in the winter.

Another well fished river is the River Yare and it too has some free fishing. A couple of spots I have found to be good are Bramington common and Thorpe Green; Bramington has roach and bream a-plenty and Thorpe Green has bream that come to to bread flake and worms.

The River Bure is my favorite river to fish. It is a slower river than most and has some lovely spots to fish along it. Coltishall Common is a great spot for bream and roach and also some very large strippys and pike. Another good spot to fish is at the small village of Belaugh; a very good area for pike but there are also large numbers of roach rudd and bream.

The River Thurne is also a lovely river which is famed for its large pike. My favorite places to fish along here are Repps Staithe, Martham Ferry and Womack Staithe.

All the places I have mentioned above are free to fish and can be accessed by car and all bar the Norwich area have free parking.

The Broads

The Norfolk Broads are a unique mixture of man made expanses of water connected by meandering rivers and dykes throughout much of Norfolk and into Suffolk. The end result is that we have around 150 miles of navigable rivers and around 41 shallow lakes, all interconnected and fringed with reed beds that give the keen sailor, the fisherman, the naturalist, and the holidaymaker, unrivalled opportunities to pursue their interests in a natural setting of some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain....
