River Wye [Private Fishing] © Wendy Boast of Riverside House http://www.riversidehouse-peakdistrict.co.uk
Despite being a landlocked county, water abounds in Derbyshire, meaning an opportunity to fish is hardly ever more than a couple of miles away. When it comes to choice of freshwater fishing, Derbyshire really does have it all; and in some of the most spectacular surroundings you could wish for. The flag of Derbyshire is coloured blue and green to reflect the rivers, reservoirs and countryside for which the county is famous for. This is Izaak Walton territory, of course. Much of the inspiration for his famous book The Compleat Angler came from his days living and fishing in the Dove valley.

With four major rivers – namely the Trent, Derwent, Dove and Wye – flowing within its borders, this county has many varied flowing-water challenges to offer the angler, whether fly, specimen or pleasure fishing is your chosen discipline. The Wye, Upper Derwent and Dove offer some of the finest river fly fishing opportunities in the country - for wild brown trout, grayling and stocked rainbows - as do the numerous smaller streams, fleams and brooks which feed these rivers. The upper Wye, Derwent and Dove each have day ticket beats available, though if you’re a serious fly angler you would probably want to buy a season permit to access the best beats. Recently, some of the smaller upland streams which feed into the Trent have become available to fly fish on a day ticket, through the innovative 'Peak Passport' scheme run by the Trent Rivers Trust: http://www.associationofriverstrusts.org.uk/passport/peak/

The rivers Dove, Trent and Derwent all offer superb specimen coarse fishing for Chub, Barbel, Perch, Pike and Bream. Most notably, the Dove regularly produces barbel in excess of 15lb, whilst the Derbyshire Derwent and Trent yield double-figure Barbel from a number of stretches. Chub appear to over 7lb from all three of these rivers, as do perch to over 3lb 8oz. Add to these prospects the opportunities to fish for Grayling, Roach and some elusive river Carp and you should have plenty to keep you occupied, all season long! There are very few river stretches available to coarse fish for free or on a day ticket within Derbyshire, but many productive stretches are available to fish through very reasonably-priced membership of various local angling clubs.

Besides Derbyshire’s wealth of rivers, it boasts some impressive reservoirs, lakes, gravel pits and ponds. Firstly the upland reservoirs such as Ladybower and Errwood offer fly fishing from bank or boat, for wild and stocked trout amongst breathtaking scenery. Ladybower is also suitable for disabled anglers, with a large, accessible fishing pontoon and 'Wheelyboat' wheelchair accessible fishing boats available to hire. Lowland reservoirs such as Staunton Harold, Foremark, Ogston and Carsington underpin the wealth of reservoir fishing that our county provides. Staunton Harold is a vast water noted for its coarse fishing, including bream, roach and pike, whilst Foremark, Ogston and Carsington are predominantly fly-only trout reservoirs.

If big carp are your focus, Derbyshire does not have too many options, but there are a few day ticket waters worth a try for carp over 20lb (with the odd thirty a possibility). These include Higham Farm, Press Manor, Hardwick Hall Lakes, Barlow Fishery and Butterley Reservoir and there are also some syndicate and club lakes which offer larger fish. Some excellent gravel pits containing big carp contained within the Pride of Derby and Derby Railway complexes. As an alternative to gravel pit carping, if you have time to put a baiting campaign together, you could always try the Trent. It’s done carp to over 40lb in the past (including the country’s most famous Koi!) and with huge floods in recent years, there are no doubt some uncaught monsters out there to reward the hardcore carper.

Derbyshire also has its share of very good 'commercial' day ticket fisheries. These vary in size and stocks, and many – including Barlow and Press Manor – offer fly fishing alongside general coarse fishing and specimen hunting opportunities. Fisheries of this nature appeal to elderly and disabled anglers – due to being easily accessible and generally having on-site toilet and café facilities – but also appeal to anglers who simply want to catch fish! Barlow Lakes http://www.barlowlakes.co.uk/ also offer camping & cottage accommodation and can even arrange for tuition & tackle hire. So if you’re looking for an angling base for a Peak District holiday, this place can offer you four coarse & carp lakes, four trout lakes and full facilities on your doorstep, but it is also well located for visiting other fisheries or to simply enjoy the Derbyshire countryside.

I hope this gives you a good idea of the majority of angling prospects available to you in Derbyshire. Please take a good look around the site for further info and if there is anything specific you would like to know, then please visit my website http://www.just-fish.co.uk and click on the link there to email me.

Angling and Fishing in Derbyshire and the Peak District

http://www.derbyshireuk.net/fishing.html
There is a wide variety of fishing opportunities in Derbyshire. The rivers of the Derbyshire Peak District, the Wye, the Dove, the Lathkill, the Derwent and others are world famous as the historic home of fly fishing, and have been fished by countless thousands since and before the days when Izzac Walton and Charles Cotton roamed these parts. More southerly the lower reaches of the river Derwent and the river trent offer coarse fishermen much game. Aside from the rivers there are numerous gravel pits, ponds, lakes and resevoirs to try out...

Pride of Derby Angling Association

http://www.prideofderby.co.uk
The “Pride of Derby Angling Association” was formed in 1897, very little is known of the club until it formed as a limited company in 1937. All early records were lost in a fire at the then secretaries home prior to 1937. The committee of the Fishing Club, which in the early days only had fishing rights on the River Derwent were forced to make a difficult decision when the then landlord decided that he needed to raise capital. It was obviously very trying times between the wars for everyone, the landlord therefore concluded that he had need to sell the fishing rights leased by the Pride of Derby… amiller95@btinternet.com

Just Fish - Andrew Kennedy - Angling Writer

http://www.just-fish.co.uk
If you don't know me already, my name is Andrew. I come from Derbyshire and I've spent the majority of my spare time fishing, ever since I was 5 years old. My dad bought me a telescopic fishing rod when on holiday in Ibiza, and ever since then, I've rarely been seen without (ahem) my rod in my hand! I grew up fishing local day-ticket ponds, catching very little to start with, but gradually managing to consistently catch plenty of gudgeon, with the odd roach, perch and crucian carp thrown in..
