A fine Kennet Barbel Graham Elliott http://www.anglingexperience.co.uk

The county of Berkshire has something to offer most fresh water anglers, but being a land locked county the sea angler residing here has a substantial journey to enjoy their sport.

The rivers Kennet, Loddon and Lambourn all offer good fishing for the game angler with some commercial lake fisheries also available. The adventurous fly fisherman can try their hand on the Thames which holds some brown trout. It may even be possible to catch a salmon, but these are very rare with reports of one being caught by a course angler every year or two.The course angler has an extensive choice with numerous commercial fisheries, gravel pits, lakes and miles of rivers and canals. In some areas of the county it seems that nearly every other farm has a small commercial fishery. These can be good to initiate the newcomer as a quick result is often important and a few are more worthy of the experienced angler requiring a degree of angling skill.

Due to extensive gravel extraction there are numerous pits available. The fish in these can run to considerable size with carp large enough to satisfy the most ardent carper. Bream, tench and roach also run to notable sizes. There is still a good number of traditional estate lakes available offering fishing in scenic surrounds. Most of these are run by clubs often at very reasonable rates.

The river angler has some of the best barbel fishing in the country with the Thames, Kennet and Lodden all producing double figure fish. These rivers also hold excellent chub, bream, roach, perch and pike. For many years these rivers have produced the odd carp but the number seems to be increasing with a 20 lb fish not that uncommon. Most sections of river are under the control of a club with a few areas being free fishing due to ownership by the Environment Agency or local council. There is also the excellent Kennet and Avon Canal in the west of the county to consider which gives good sport all year round.

Angling is a popular pastime to the residents of Berkshire. The counties fisheries are also popular to anglers from wider afield as the network of roads in and to the county are good. Plenty of anglers from west London find Berkshire attractive for its ease of access, attractive scenery and good fishing.
