Croatia is a country in Central Europe and Southeastern Europe at the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain, the Balkans, and the Adriatic Sea. Its capital and largest city is Zagreb. Croatia borders Slovenia to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast, Serbia to the east, and Montenegro to the southeast. It lies between latitudes 42° and 47° N, and longitudes 13° and 20° E. Its terrain is diverse, including with plains, lakes and rolling hills in the continental north and northeast, densely wooded mountains in Lika and Gorski Kotar, part of the Dinaric Alps;
and rocky coastlines on the Adriatic Sea (Istria, Northern Sea coast and Dalmatia). Lakes Croatia has numerous natural lakes. The biggest one, Vransko Lake stretches over 30 km˛ in Zadar and Šibenik-Knin county. Lake Peruča is the biggest artificial lake used for Energy generation in Dalmatia. The most famous are the Plitvice lakes, a system of 16 lakes and waterfalls connecting them over the dolomite and limestone cascades. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colours, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colours change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight.
