Fishing is not so much a pastime as a way of life in 'God's Own Country'. With a small population and a huge coastline of two oceans (Pacific and Tasman Sea) it is hardly surprising that boat ownership is very high and sea fishing rife. Moreover, most people will eat what they catch smoking their Pacific cod or kingfish on the verandah ready to accompany the barbie or supper. So some will set nets but many more will enjoy the sport of fishing too.
Further off the shore is some of the best game fishing in the world and dozens of boats offering fishing charters from most of the larger harbours.Had men not intervened river and lake fishing would have been limited to the few small native species and some scarily huge eels that scare youngsters in 'togs' cooling off in streams. However, in less enlightened times, unaware of the fragility of local ecologies, species introduction was wholesale and native fauna of all sorts barely hold on in many areas. Lakes and rivers now teem with trout and salmon and they have done so well that fly-fishing is a major tourist attraction. Moreover the trout in some of the large lakes are truly huge so offer better sport than most other places in the world.
Some coarse species were also introduced but there is an active campaign to try and eradicate the Koi, grasscarp, rudd, perch, and tench introduced by misguided anglers. While it is frowned upon, there are still isolated lakes and flooded quarries where coarse fishermen can wet their lines. It is now an offence to deliberately introduce non native species into rivers and lakes and where they still survive they are likely to be removed in time.
