Christmas Island is located 2600km's northwest of Perth, Western Australia. Its closest neighbour is Java a mere 360kms away. 63% of the islands 135 square kilometers is National Park. Christmas Island is an Australian external territory. Due to the unique geographical nature of Christmas Island, you can drift along the steep dropoffs as you cast poppers for Giant Trevally, whilst at the same time another angler can be fishing for Yellowfin Tuna on the other side of the boat.

There is a wonderful variety of species commonly caught at Christmas Island, but the focus of local charter fishing operator, is Giant Trevally, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo and Sailfish.

Christmas Island experiences a tropical equatorial climate with wet and dry seasons. The wet season is from December to April when the island comes under the influence of the north-west monsoons. During the rest of the year, the south-east trade winds bring slightly lower temperatures and humidity with much less rain. Further information about the climate can be found on the Christmas Island Tourism Association website.

Pictured here is a 75kg sailfish - Growing to over 3.4m and 100kg the Indo - the Pacific Sailfish is believed to be the fastest of all fish, having been clocked at 110km/h. Christmas Island is home to as large specimens as you would find anywhere. They can be caught by trolling, but the fun really starts when you throw poppers and stickbaits at them.NB Kiribati nation in the Pacific Ocean includes an island known as Christmas Island - which is quite different from 'our' Indian Ocean island that lays claim to the name, that is a dependency of Australia - so do not be confused between the two... I hope that I haven't got it wrong in the links below!
