Fishing from the causeway between Cayo Coco and Cayo Romano ©Brian Anderson

I have not fished in Cuba but, travelling around the island it was clear that fishing for the pot is popular in the sea from piers and causeways and pleasure angling also takes place on freshwater reservoirs. On holidays the seawall in Havana is crowded with fishermen and it seems to be as much for sport as for supper.

Judging by my meals there are plenty of snapper and other small fish to make this worthwhile as well as the legendary prey of deep sea fisherman such as Ernest Hemmingway!

The 'flats' around the cays in the north must be very similar to that off the Florida Cays which are only a few tens of miles away. Land crabs are numerous enough to keep many birds of prey happy and their migration to the coast is a site to behold and must attract shoals of predatory fish.
